Tips For Starting Your New Fitness Routine

Welcome to Pinnacle Health Club. We are excited to be part of your new fitness journey!

We have put together our top tips when it comes to starting at a new gym. Whether you have been training for some time or you are brand new to exercise, starting the gym is a great opportunity to establish a new routine and set the habits that you may have struggled to set in the past.

1. Make sure you have what you need

There are some essential items you will need for every gym workout.
A towel: Make sure you have a towel that is big enough to put over equipment such as bike seat or a bench. Use this to keep yourself dry and the equipment clean.

Drink bottle: Staying hydrated during your workout is really important to replenish any fluids that you lose during exercise. Make sure you drink water before, during and after every workout that you do.]

Comfortable Clothing: Wearing appropriate clothing when you work out is important to keep you cool and comfortable. Avoid wide-leg or loose pants that could get tangled up in the pedals or your feet.

2. Plan a schedule and try to stick to it

We all know the importance of consistency when it comes to a new routine so try and plan out what days and times are going to work best for you to train based on the commitments you have in your life, as well as when you have the most energy.  Do you always feel tired by the end of the day and end up cancelling your evening workouts? Start a new routine of working out in the morning instead.

Remember, your training needs to be sustainable so even if you feel full of motivation and want to train every day at the beginning, maybe set yourself a realistic goal of 2- 3 workouts a week and if you can do more then you have over- achieved!

Put your workouts in your diary so you block out the time each day and remind yourself of the times you have dedicated to train.
Of course, if you have children, it can be a little more complicated to work around, but remember that prioritising time for yourself will ultimately make you a better parent for them too.

3. Find a way to be accountable and reward yourself!

Everyone feels good when they achieve their goals they set out to, whether that is a physical goal or to change in behaviour. How are you going to make sure you achieve the goal you set and reward yourself for when you get there?

Write it Down
By simply writing your goal down, it changes it from just an idea, into a commitment. You can write your goal down in a diary or as a note on the fridge! As long as it is somewhere that you can go back to regularly to remind yourself of what you are striving to achieve.

Tell Someone
Sharing your goals is another way to make a commitment that you are accountable to. Having a family member or a friend support you on your journey can also help when your motivation dwindles and you need a little push. They’re also there to have someone to celebrate with you when you achieve your goal too!

Use Technology to Track Your Progress
Smart watches and fitness tracking apps such as Map My Fitness and MyZone are great ways to keep track of your activity levels, set goals and watch your progress.
